Show Up and Do the Work

June 1, 2012 § 1 Comment

My Gonzo DaysI few months ago, I chanced upon a video about the artist Chuck Close. I found quite a bit of inspiration in Close’s story, and I wish I had bookmarked the video because I can’t find it now. The most inspiring part, however, was something Close said, and I quickly jotted it down and pinned it to the cork board above my desk. What he said was this:

“Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and do the work.”

Don’t sit around waiting for the Muse to whisper some breathtaking idea in your ear. Sit down, start writing, and see where it goes. Show up and do the work.

You’ll be glad you did.
