Passing the Devil

I’m an atheist, and I don’t believe in the supernatural. No afterlife, no ghosts, no gods or devils, heavens or hells. I trust science, and so far, science has found no evidence that there’s something after death. Just darkness and silence.
And yet sometimes — sometimes — something happens that makes me wonder, just for a moment, if maybe there is an undiscovered country.
This morning on my drive to work, I sat at a red light next to and a bit back from a black Ford Explorer with a vanity license plate that read SINFUL1. It made me smile and wonder who was brave enough to slap that plate on a vehicle in ultra-conservative Southern Ohio.
When the light turned green, I passed the SUV and looked over at the driver. Well, up and over, because I drive a very small car. I got a glimpse of a woman, dark hair, 30s if I guessed right. Sunglasses. Severe cheekbones.
As traffic flowed, she shifted lanes and moved behind me a short time later. I glanced in the rearview mirror to get a better look at this “sinful one,” and saw the morning light reflected in twin blazes in her dark aviator shades.
I was being followed by a pretty woman in a dark Ford with a SINFUL1 plate and pale fire erupting from her eyes.
It made me pause and consider that, just perhaps, there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in my philosophy. That maybe the Devil does exist, and she drives a black Ford, and I passed her on the road.
